LBCarCo Chatter 07/30/2017

The Chatter this Week at LBCarCo (July 30, 2017)

LBCarCo Chatter - 2nd Visit to Havana, Cuba - Austin Healey Spotted

After our first (and long awaited) visit to Havana, Cuba last February, we decided to go again, this time on a cruise from Tampa. We spent two days docked in Havana, right in the heart of beautiful old Havana with its amazing architecture, memorable 1950s American cars and friendly people.

We crammed a lot into two very HOT July days - but still have places we didn't get to! But we did do a walking tour of old Havana's plazas and streets. The hot humid weather made several stops for ice cold mojitos very welcome. We attended an evening performance at Legendarios del Guarjirito which features traditional Cuban music and dance.

The second day we toured in a pink 1956 Plymouth Belvedere convertible with a local guide, who we met in February after a morning start at a sidewalk cafe for Cuban coffee and guava pastries along with our Airbnb hosts from February. (it was great to see them again.) Another couple from the ship joined us for the day too.

As we departed on our tour I spotted an Austin Healey on the other side of the Malecon, We were doing a U Turn and I asked our driver to catch it but it turned off. Oh well, but later in the day we saw it again and there were 4 people in it (it was used as a taxi). I had a brief chance to talk to the owner and he has owned it for about 30 years and is/was a 100/4. We could only talk for a minute as I did not want to hold up our tour. I gave him my card and hopefully he will email me. He said it is very hard to get parts for it. It has been heavily modified to keep it running as you can see.

Highlights of the tour were the Miramar district, once home to Havana's elite - the beautiful mansions now house embassies; Colon cemetery (third largest in the world); Fusterlandia (an ordinary neighborhood made magical with homes, shops and public spaces covered with mosaic art by local artist Jose Fuster); the elegant Hotel Nacional de Cuba, built in 1930 and frequented through the years by the famous and infamous, and a wonderful lunch at Palador del Santa Barbara, a privately owned restaurant located in the owner's home. And we were welcomed into our guide's in-laws home for Cuban coffee after our lunch. Truly a day to remember in a wonderful, welcoming city.

MG MGB - 1962
Blending sleek good looks with affordability, the MGB quickly became the world's most popular roadster, leading to overall sales of more than 500,000 cars before its sad demise in 1980.

The epitome of automotive elegance, the Silver Shadow combined traditional charm with modern technology to create a car offering quite unsurpassable standards of refinement and comfort.

Morris Minor Van PostEurop entry 2013
Launched in 1953, five years after the original Morris Minor saloon, the Light Commercial Vehicle range proved hugely popular with firms large and small thanks to its ease of use and sizable carrying capacity. The Royal Mail Morris Minor in particular became something of a British institution thanks in part to its length of service, with bright red vans being used to pick up and deliver mail into the late 1970s.

Austin FX4
Designed by Austin's Eric Bailey and introduced in 1958, the manufacture of this much-loved 'black cab' stretched for 39 years. With a separate body and chassis, and initially powered by a
2.2-litre, four-cylinder engine, the FX4 was a rugged workhorse where practicality and ease of maintenance were key considerations as six-figure mileages were the norm. Production of this iconic design was later taken over by LTI (London Taxis International).

Ford Anglia 105E
When the term 'panda car' was first coined in the mid 1960s, it denoted a small saloon such as the Ford Anglia 105E where sections of bodywork were finished in contrasting colours. The Anglia was one of a number of different vehicles used to meet the growing need for motorised patrol cars in police forces across the UK. In addition to being modestly priced, it was reliable, economical to run and easy to manoeuvre.

Land Rover Defender 110
The original Land Rover entered production in 1948 and since then countless variations have followed with different wheelbases and body styles. The vehicle has long been favoured by the British Army and by farmers because of its agility off road, while emergency services such as Her Majesty's Coastguard were also quick to adopt the model for its resilience and ability to carry life-saving equipment to the remotest areas.

LBCarCo Adventure 2018 is now open for reservations. Come and see the Tulips and Rhine River Cruise

Our 2011 group trip included a wonderful day cruise on the Rhine. That made us think how wonderful it would be to spend a week on the river, enjoying the various places and sights along the way. After looking at several companies (they all looked very nice, some had better features in one area or another) we finally decided on Viking River Cruises April 25 sailing from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam, Holland. This date will allow us a post-cruise stay in Amsterdam - in time for tulip season! These River Boats are small so it will be a very nice intimate gathering. So far we have 20 cabins that are booked. (There really is no set limit until the boat is full :)

Our travel agent has taken this exact cruise and could not fault anything. Viking also has what seems to be the best air program - allowing for the post-cruise stay in Amsterdam, $395 per person from many departure cities. (THE AIRFARE DEAL EXPIRES THE END OF JULY, but Viking could continue it, though it is not guaranteed.) Viking also offers a 2 night per-cruise stay in Lucerne which will give everyone time to adjust to jet lag and enjoy this beautiful lakeside Swiss city.

Our travel agent, Angie LaValle of World of Travel in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan has blocked a group of rooms on the Viking long-ship Idi, sailing on April 25, 2018 for seven nights. To include the pre-cruise say in Lucerne, the departure date from North America would be Sunday, April 22. Return to the US (or Canada) would be on Sunday, May 6.

On this cruise you will visit the highlights of the legendary Rhine. You will see riverbank castles as you sail by and tour both Marksburg Castle and the ruins of Heidelberg Castle. Enjoy the scenic cruise along the Middle Rhine, home of the legendary "Lorelei." Visit Cologne, the jewel of the Rhine with it awe inspiring cathedral, and experience the lush Black Forest landscape. You'll tour multicultural Strasbourg in France and enjoy the nightlife in Rudesheim's "Drosselgrasse." And finish by exploring Holland's windmills and waterworks. Tours, led by knowledgeable local guides, to all of these are included along with a culture curriculum - with activities such as classical music, a cooking demonstration, glassblowing demonstration, and informative talks. What else is included?

7 nights accommodation in outside staterooms with river view
All port charges and taxes
Three meals daily featuring local specialties (along with American classics)
Wine, beer and soft drinks included with lunch and dinner
Specialty coffee & tea available 24 hours
Laundry service
Bottle water replenished daily
In room TV with movies on demand

On-board facilities include the Viking Lounge with piano entertainment, Viking Bar, a library, sun deck and walking track.

Here are the cruise prices per person:
Window Cabins from $3,324 to $3,424 per person
French Balcony cabins from $3,624 to $3,824 per person
Balcony cabins from $4,024 to $4,224 per person
Veranda suites are $5,824 per person

The pre-cruise stay in Lucerne will be $699 per person and includes hotel, breakfasts, guided walking tour, services of a Viking host and transfers - airport to hotel and hotel to ship. Each cabin on the ship will also receive an on-board credit of $250 to spend as you wish on extras such as cocktails or optional tours.

The deposit is $500 per person when you book. The $395 for airfare needs to be paid by the end of July - unless the offer is extended. Final cruise payment is due October 25.

We will plan a 4 night post-cruise stay in Amsterdam to include the annual tulip display at Kuekenhof Gardens, the Anne Frank house, canal cruises, and more. Once our 2017 trip is completed, we can start on the plans for these 4 days. The cost for this (hotel and activities) will be determined then but we can assure you it will be a good value while providing comfortable and convenient accommodations.

If you have always wanted to experience a river cruise - and would like to join a wonderful group of British car folks, we would love to have you join the group. If you want to book, please call Angie Lavalle at 888-268-7500 and drop me an email to let me know as well. Her email address is If you have any questions, drop us a line at .

(the flashlight part turns off when work light is in use) It requires 4 AAA batteries that are not included, you can even use rechargeable batteries if you like.

Spam or Not to Spam

In this day and age Spam is not a good thing as we all know, but at one time it was the main staple to feed our troops in the field. Somehow this word has now been attached to unwanted emails. Our Chatter can also be viewed as Spam by some folks that get it when we send a NewsFlash or Chatter. PLEASE if you decide you don't want our emails rather than choosing to block it click on the link at the top of the Chatter or NewsFlash that says:

"To unsubscribe from our mailing list, please click here."

You will be automatically removed from our list no questions asked. Some folks enjoy reading the Chatter, which includes tech tips, event listings and more, but if you decide to block our newsletters with your Spam Blocker this sends a Blacklist warning to many ISP's and can prevent other folks from receiving our information.

Thanks in advance for your consideration.

On The Borderline by Rick Astley/114

Our good friend Rick Astley of British Car Electrical Book fame also has a funny side when he is not delving into the electrical issues of British automotive mysteries.

Rick has been doing these cartoons for our local MG Club for years and I thought that they might be cute to share and Rick gave us permission to publish them. They tend to be leaning to the Detroit/Windsor area but I think they are very humorous and as you can see Rick and his MGB along with his lovely wife are usually the personalities in the cartoons. They are all in fun and we hope you enjoy.

Oversize Shipping

On April 11, 2013 We were notified by Moss that their oversize fee structure would be put into place that day. (it has always been there to some extent, but now is formal.) This has been coming for some time now since the cost of shipping has steadily been rising and the carriers have continued to reduce the size requirements for standard packaging.

You will notice when you check out on our website (also on the Moss website and in the new Moss catalogs - available for PDF downloading on their or our website - click on the car logos to download) oversize parts are indicated and the extra cost for shipping them. Note there may be some parts that they have have not indicated as oversize but actually are. If they charge us for an oversize fee we may have to bill you for the fee and will then add it to the oversize fee notations on our site for future reference (we are never told in advance.)

LBCarCo always will attempt to give you the best prices and shipping rates whenever possible and we are also looking for avenues to save you, our customers money. Some of these cost saving methods are our Loyalty Program, slight delays in shipping to consolidate your order for more economical shipping when possible, shipping by a different carrier such as post when possible and more. We will be constantly monitoring this new program and will tweak it as needed.

This is very rare but on orders shipped by air that are over oversize, by weight or dimensions, we reserve the right to charge actual shipping. Usually shipments via air are considered oversize if over 12 x 12 x 12". Please ask us for a quote on air shipping in advance or we will notify you if you have requested this on your order by checking the confirm carriage before shipping block.

All quotations on shipping are approximate since actual shipping cost may vary some depending on fuel surcharges, actual size and weight once packed and when the order is actually shipped. Every effort has been made to provide accurate information. We reserve the right to correct typographical errors and will not be held liable for inaccuracy of pricing, descriptions or applications.

LBCarCo Tech Tips - Each Chatter a New Reader Submitted Tech Tip! (WE NEED TECH TIPS PLEASE)

Tech Tip this issue is from Joe Dufresne. Thanks Joe ($20.00 will be credited to your LBCarCo account) Please contact us ASAP for further info.

Installing a Nut or Bolt in Tight Space

Here's a simple little tip that I had to use a few times when working on my LBC. When you need to install a bolt or nut in a tight space, using a socket on an extension or a box wrench, try inserting the nut or bolt into the tool by first placing a thin piece of paper over the opening of the wrench or socket. A cash register receipt or a small piece of your LBCarCo Invoice will work fine! The paper will hold the fastener in place like a magnet and allow you to work over or in the tight spot without dropping it. When done, you can easily remove the tool and pull away the paper.

Please Keep those TIPS and Humorous Stories coming, WE ALWAYS NEED THEM!

You can earn a $20 purchase credit for each Tip or Story that is published in our weekly mailing. Please send your tech tips or other submission to me at put the words Tech Tip or Story in the subject line please. If you don't currently have an account with LBCarCo you can still make a submission. We will provide your credit of $20.00 (only one credit may be used per order/shipment, not valid for subscriptions) any time you should purchase something online from LBCarCo. Humorous Story or an article about and picture of your first LBC you would like to share with our audience, drop me a note along with the submission. They should be no more than 500 to 1,000 words. If we use it we will provide you with a $20 LBCarCo purchase credit.

Tech Tips are a service of LBCarCo and our friends and customers. They are provided on a use at your own risk basis. These tech tips may be reprinted in club publications as long as credit is given to Little British Car Co, LTD along with reference to our website and the individual that provided the tip. All award certificates or credits such as show, email, tech tip etc. (but not limited to) are good for one year from date of award. Paid gift certificates do not expire.

You can now view our entire list of previous tech tips by visiting LBCarCo Tech Tips or by clicking on the link at the top of our website.
